How much should you charge for your e-book?

One of the most important questions for writers selling directly to fans is what should be the price? While there are no simple answers to that question, and as more writers and readers connect directly, best practices will change over time.

So, we have put together this simple guide to evaluate the options.

  1. Same as typical retail book price: The rationale for sticking to the tried and tested model is twofold - one reader is used to those cover prices and understands what they get in turn for a full price book. Typical for paperback in India Rs 200-300 or in US/Europe $10-20. Pricing is the same as physical retail and Kindle eBooks is that if you do have your books available on those platforms then it helps being consistent for readers.

  2. “Fan price”: You can also offer your work with “iTunes music download” like pricing  (Rs50, $2-3). This would make sense if your readers follow you on platforms like Instagram or TikTok and are not used to buying your written work. This is a way to get them started...

3. Super affordable: A pricing model that you can try only on a platform like stck.me is to offer your work in small increments (e.g., chapters) for micropayments. This would make sense if your work can reach a very large audience if the affordability was high (e.g., fan fiction). Stck.me allows pricing as low as Rs 10 in India and $1 in US and Euro 1.

Pricing, as goes the cliche, is an art and a science. As a writer, the best advice we have is to keep it simple and closely tied to the needs of your audience. The good news is you can experiment easily on stck.me to settle on what works best for you.
